Overview
Seeing Machines exists to get people home safely by developing and commercialising driver monitoring system technology and products applying eye and face tracking technologies. Data collection captures video, audio and subject metadata (i.e., eye features, age, height, ethnicity etc) to support the development and improvement of our technologies and products. We use real human subjects to train our algorithms and develop the most precise machine-learned solution.
In-vehicle and simulation study:
As the participant, you will drive a test vehicle and a driving simulator containing cameras and data capture equipment. We require you to complete two data collection sessions. Session 1 will take place in the daytime where you will drive the test vehicle. Session 2 will take place in the evening where you will drive in the simulator. Prior to the sessions, we will run an orientation to explain the data collection process, ensure you are comfortable using the equipment and understand the drowsiness recording protocol. Please find more detailed information about each session below:
Orientation
• Duration: 30 - 45 min.
• We complete necessary administration and collect relevant metadata.
• Introduce you to the test vehicle, the driving simulator and KSS (drowsiness) reporting and give you an opportunity to practice with the equipment.
• Usually performed just before Session 1. If you’re unsure whether you’re affected by simulator sickness*, please advise us when you register for the data collection.
*PLEASE NOTE: A significant number of people experience simulator sickness – this is where you feel nausea and severe discomfort when looking at a moving virtual environment. You should not participate in this data collection if you are susceptible to simulator sickness or motion sickness. If you’re unsure, please advise us when you register for the data collection.
Session 1 (Alert)
• Duration: expect 70 min in total duration.
• You will perform a naturalistic drive in a test vehicle on urban and highway roads near Fyshwick. During the drive you will report on your drowsiness level.
• The test vehicle is automatic transmission – anyone with a valid drivers’ licence will be able to drive this vehicle.
• You must bring your licence and keep it with you during the data collection. We will also need to record your licence details.
Session 2 (Drowsy)
• Duration: expect 130 min total duration.
• You will perform a drive in the simulator. During the drive you will report on your drowsiness level.
• The session will conclude a little after 1am. You will need to arrange transport to and from the data collection*. The data collection payment you receive includes consideration for a taxi or Uber service. We provide payment a few days after completion of the data collection, so please be prepared to pay the cost of transport on the day of this session.
* If someone accompanies you, they will not be able to stay inside the building during the data collection.
