Multi-Feature Data Collection
Overview
Seeing Machines exists to get people home safely by developing and commercialising driver monitoring system technology and products applying eye and face tracking technologies. Data collection captures video, audio and subject metadata (i.e., eye features, age, height, ethnicity etc) to support the development and improvement of our technologies and products. We use real human subjects to train our algorithms and develop the most precise machine-learned solution.
In-vehicle study:
As the participant, you will occupy the driver’s seat of a test vehicle equipped with cameras and data capture devices and perform various tasks as instructed by the data collector. You will complete four data collection sessions on the same day. These sessions are designed to gather insights into various aspects of driver behaviour and specifically, distraction. Below, you will find a comprehensive breakdown of each session:
Orientation
• Duration: 10-15 minutes.
• Initial paperwork and basic information collection.
• Brief introduction to the data collection process.
Session 1
• Duration: 75-90 minutes.
• You will look on the road and then look at different Driver Attention State (DAS) regions for a few seconds as per instruction from the data collector in a stationary vehicle. These regions may include the rear-view mirror, side mirrors, or the back seat.
Session 2
• Duration: 20 minutes.
• You will perform a set of hand movements with some handheld items in a stationary vehicle.
• This may involve the consumption of snacks or soft drinks provided by the data collector. You are welcome to bring your preferred snacks if you have specific dietary requirements or allergies.
Session 3
• Duration: 25 minutes.
• You will hold a phone in different positions while performing specific head movements in a stationary vehicle. You may be provided with a phone for temporary use in this session.
Session 4
• Duration: 20 minutes.
• You will execute a series of prescribed smoking behaviours using an unlit cigarette in a stationary vehicle. While natural smoking behaviour is encouraged, non-smokers are welcome to simulate smoking gestures, including holding the cigarette in various postures and hand movements.
• We will provide each participant with cigarettes for this session but they will remain unlit. A tobacco tube filter plug will also be available if you are reluctant to hold a real cigarette.
Session 5
• Duration: 20 minutes.
• You will drive the test vehicle on urban and highway roads near Fyshwick and be asked to perform a set of hand movements with some handheld items. Please note we take every precaution to ensure that these hand movements do not put you in any danger while driving the vehicle.
Overall Duration
The entire data collection process is estimated to take 3 to 3.5 hours in total. All sessions must be conducted on the same day to maintain consistency and data integrity. You will have the opportunity to take breaks between sessions. Please come 10 minutes before the appointment time allowing for check-in.
